Meet the Founders!

Dean and Amy Mathis

Dean and Amy Mathis, the founders of Hand2thePlow, have spent over 40 years in Christ-centered ministry, dedicating their lives to serving “the least of these” through both local and global efforts. With a deep commitment to bringing hope and restoration, they have faithfully provided affordable housing to the poor while walking alongside the most vulnerable with dignity and compassion. After decades of ministry, they felt God stirring in them a fresh vision — to create Hand2thePlow as a way to mobilize others to serve, to seize today’s opportunities to meet needs in San Antonio, and to equip the Church to live out Christ’s call in tangible, lasting ways.

Who We Are

Hand2thePlow was born out of a call in Luke 9 to put our hand to the plow and serve with unwavering commitment. Our team is made up of ordinary people with a passion for meeting the needs of Greater San Antonio’s most vulnerable.

Why We Started

We are driven by the urgent need to address the plight of the homeless and the most vulnerable children in our society, particularly those who are victims of human trafficking or trapped in the foster care system. In Jesus' name, we answer this call to serve the least of these.

Our Mission

Hand to the Plow’s mission is rooted in Jesus' call for His followers to be faithful and serve others, as stated in Luke 9:62: "No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God." We aim to inspire the Church and fellow believers to join us in meeting the needs of those who are most vulnerable, until Christ returns. In doing so, we honor Matthew 25:40: “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

Who We Serve

The most vulnerable.

We will serve individuals and families in need of affordable housing, community, restoration for victims of trafficking, and support for those navigating life within or after experience in the foster care system. Our partners include Habitat for Humanity, Amor Ministries, Towne Twin Village, Just Help One, Mercy Gate Ministries, Meant to Soar, and the South Texas Alliance for Children.

How We Accomplish This

By raising funds and recruiting volunteers to support our partners and initiatives. Through private donors, grants, and the help of dedicated volunteers, we will provide the resources necessary to make a lasting impact in the lives of those we serve.

Where We Serve

Our efforts will begin in San Antonio, Texas, but our vision is global. By collaborating with like-minded organizations, we will extend our reach to address the needs of the homeless, those affected by human trafficking, and the children in the foster care system both nationally and internationally.

Long-term Vision

In the short term, we aim to provide affordable housing and restore dignity to children impacted by trafficking and abuse over the next five years. In the long term, we aspire to expand our efforts across the nation and globally, helping those in need in communities around the world.
